Burslem Rotarians fund much needed holidays for local carers

Rotarians from the City of Stoke on Trent and a famous, North Waleian seaside resort are combining their resources to ensure that dedicated carers from this area enjoy a well-deserved break from their demanding (but vital) chores! For the past three years, the Rotary Clubs of Burslem and Llandudno have joined together, sending four or five people, who care for loved ones or relatives suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease on holiday to Llandudno, where they are able to ‘re charge their batteries’ and also meet people and make new friends. “Burslem Rotary Club provides for the carers to go to Llandudno, where they stay at The Esplanade Hotel, a nice seafront venue” explained Past President, Christine Colaluca. “Rotarians from the Burslem club take them to the resort and pick them up for the return journey, and members of the Llandudno club look after them during their vacation. “It is really important that these hard-working conscientious carers enjoy some time to themselves, after looking after people for so long. “Hopefully they also develop new friendships while on holiday”. “This is important, because caring for a person who does not know who he or she is, weakens one’s own existing friendships. “They need someone themselves, as well as providing constant care for others. “It is nice for them to feel that someone actually thinks about them too. “Their problem is that they really need to take a break, but they ask themselves “How can I do it?” alternatively... Tall Ships through Jubilee Trust

The Rotary Club of Burslem recently arrange for Steph, a disabled student from Stoke on Trent 6th form College, to go on a five day cruise as part of the crew on a tall ship run by the Jubilee Trust. Members of the Rotary club delivered her to Poole and President Linda collected her from Southampton – see photo. On arrival she was kitted up with waterproofs etc. and met another member of the crew, Laura, who would be her buddy and assist her during the cruise.

Steph helped to run the ship with her watch, pulling ropes, cooking, and going on watch in the early hours of the morning. When we arranged the cruise Steph said she wanted to go up the mast and the picture shows her on her way up – wheel chair and all. It was an eventful trip including a force 7 gale in the English Channel and a visit to Cherbourg where Steph spent an evening ashore drinking with some of her crew and crews from boats of other countries. Steph’s verdict? “I would love to do it all again”.
